Adult Swim, Cartoon Network’s late-night purveyor of fine (and often surreal) animated (or not, if the mood strikes) entertainment for non-kids, is currently touring the country with another of its patented publicity events. The network is putting on an “outdoor drive-in movie experience” showing off unaired episodes of never-before-seen pilots and specials. Among the shows scheduled to be screened are “Squidbillies,” “Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell,” “The Eric Andre Show,” “Dream Corp, LLC” and more. The Adult Swim Drive-In will be making just 10 stops across the US. On Thursday, Aug. 18, it will pull into Albuquerque’s Balloon Fiesta Park. In addition to the show screenings, Adult Swim is promising trivia, prizes, vouchers for meals from local food trucks and hot air balloon rides (weather permitting). All of this is free with an RSVP. True to the spirit of Adult Swim, you have to be 18 or older to get in. To secure your spot in line, go to adultswim.com/presents/adult-swim-drive-in.
Movies on the Plaza continues this Friday, Aug. 5, with a free screening of Disney/Marvel’s animated hit Big Hero 6. The night starts out, as always, with ABQ Food Friday from 5 to 8pm. That features a pop-up happy hour stocked with fine craft beers from some of the city’s finest breweries and food from one of our city’s best food trucks. (Admission is free, but food and beer will cost ya.) That’s followed at sunset (around 8:30pm) with the screening of 2014 computer-animated sci-fi superhero flick Big Hero 6 on the big outdoor screen near Civic Plaza Main Stage. Some seating is available, but you’re free to bring your own chairs/blankets. This is a bike- and dog-friendly event. Parking is available underneath Civic Plaza in Downtown Albuquerque.
On Tuesday, Aug. 9, from 6:30 to 8:30pm, the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists will present a workshop on low budget theatrical agreements and new media contracts. By attending this presentation, filmmakers and actors will “become familiar with the SAG-AFTRA low budget and new media agreements and learn how to employ SAG-AFTRA members in your projects.” Basically, if you wanna use union actors in your low-budget films, this will tell you how to do it. Cynthia Williams, Regional Education & Outreach Liaison, is visiting from the SAG-AFTRA office in Los Angeles and will lead the presentation. The event takes place at WESST Enterprise Center, AB Potter Training Room (609 Broadway NE). There is no charge for admission, but you do need to RSVP to guarantee a seat. Contact cynthia.williams@sagaftra.org to reserve your space. The event is intended for union “members, pre-members and industry.” Light refreshments will be served.
