The Adult Swim Drive-In is kicking off this Thursday, Aug 18, at the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta Park. Cartoon Network’s late-night block of weird, cult, surreal and otherwise “adult” programming invites you to “cuddle up under the stars” and watch never-before-seen pilots and specials from some of the network’s favorite shows. There will be trivia, prizes and free food from local food trucks (while supplies last). This is an 18 and over event. Doors open at 7pm. Movies on the Plaza continues this Friday, Aug. 19, at Harry A. Kinney Plaza in Downtown Albuquerque with a free public screening of the 1993 family classic The Sandlot. This nostalgic suburban comedy centers around a new kid in town who joins the neighborhood baseball team, circa 1962. Hijinks ensue. The movie starts at dusk (around 8pm). Come by beforehand for live music, food and a variety of local microbrews. Seating is available, but your free to bring your own blankets or chairs.
Reel World: Better Red Better Red
The Red Nation Film Fest in Los Angeles has combined forces with this year’s Santa Fe Indian Market and will be presenting a mini “On the Road” film fest Aug. 18 through 21 at the Jean Cocteau Cinema (418 Montezuma). This award-winning collection of Native American cinema celebrates the 20th anniversary of Red Nation. The fest starts out on Thursday at 7pm with a red-carpet entrance, a celebrity reception and a screening of the 90-minute documentary Night Before the Oscars. This film introduces several of today’s leading Native actors, interviewed ahead of their appearances at the 2016 Academy Awards ceremony. A Q&A with the filmmakers and “special guests” will follow the screening. Friday continues with North Mountain (4pm) and Awakening in Taos (7pm). Saturday brings Paya: The Water Story of the Paiute (2pm), Power Lines (4:30pm) and The Power of Film (7pm). Sunday closes out with Dreamkeeper (2pm) and Yellow Rock (4:15pm) Tickets run between $12 for the gala opening night and $7 for the matinee films. Reel World: Parity Party Parity Party
New Mexico Women in Film will host a forum on “Gender Parity in the Film Industry” on Sunday, Aug. 21, from 2 to 4pm. Director’s Guild of America Women’s Steering Committee member and author of the blog “Women Directors in Hollywood,” Maria Giese, will talk via Skype about the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s widening investigation into Title VII discrimination issues in the film industry. Admission is free for NMWIF members and $15 for nonmembers. This event will take place at Center Stage Santa Fe (505 Camino de los Marquez in Santa Fe).
