Noted fantasy author Peter S. Beagle has been touring the country, introducing screenings of the 1982 animated adaptation of his novel The Last Unicorn. The tour finally hits Albuquerque this Thursday, March 12. It will be happening at the Rio Rancho Premiere Cinema (1000 Premiere Parkway SE) at 7pm. Tickets are $9.50 for adults and $6.75 for students/seniors.

Reel World: Get Reel Get Reel

Reel New Mexico, Santa Fe’s only monthly independent film series, returns on Thursday, March 12, with a screening of The Milagro Man: The Irrepressible Multicultural Life and Literary Times of John Nichols. This 78-minute documentary explores the literary works and social activism of Taos resident John Nichols—best known as the author of the “New Mexico Trilogy” (The Milagro Beanfield War, The Magic Journey, The Nirvana Blues). A $5 suggested donation gets you in the door. The screening starts at 7pm at La Tienda Performance Space at Eldorado. Go to reelnewmexico.com for directions.

Reel World: Acting! Acting!

The New Mexico Actors Showcase will take place this Saturday, March 14, at the African American Performing Arts Center at Expo New Mexico (310 San Pedro NE). New Mexico actors were asked to submit a 60-second video. Each submission was judged by local casting directors and talent agents. The top submissions in each of three age/talent categories will now have the opportunity to perform live on stage, where they will be competing for top honors and prizes designed to hepl the actors further their acting careers. Doors open at 6pm. Show starts at 8pm. Tickets are $10 each or two for $15 and are available through holdmyticket.com. This event is sponsored by the New Mexico Film Foundation and the Southwest Arts Group.

Reel World: Teaching Authenticity Teaching Authenticity

The busy New Mexico Film Foundation is also sponsoring a two-day “Authenticity Workshop” with acting coach Laura Gardner. The event will take place at the African American Performing Arts Center at Expo New Mexico. The two-day class (Saturday 11:30am to 3:30pm and Sunday 10am to 5pm) will set you back $185. A one-day Saturday class costs $100, while the one-day Sunday class costs $135. You can take a non-participatory audit of either day for $35. To register for classes, go to eventbrite.com. Reel World: Youth Of Today Youth Of Today

The 2015 Film or Flight Youth Film Festival lands at KiMo Theatre (423 Central NW) this Friday, March 13. From 7 to 10pm, a wide assortment of high school and college films from the Albuquerque area will be highlighted. Entrants were given just 72 hours in which to create their mini-masterpieces. Come check out the results and cheer on your favorites. This event is hosted by Warehouse 508 and film!ABQ. Admission is free to the public.

Reel World: Q And A Q And A

Indie Q, film! ABQ’s quarterly celebration of Albuquerque’s vibrant local film scene, hits the KiMo Theatre this Wednesday, March 18, at 7pm. Several recently completed local shorts will be featured. Admission is free.
