Basement Films, UNM’s Department of Cinematic Arts and Department of Architecture, and the Artslab are bringing a very special guest to Albuquerque this weekend. A series of public events will introduce multimedia artist Chip Lord to local audiences. Lord is best known as a member of the legendary arts collective Ant Farm (1968-1978). The group was founded as an “alternative architecture” practice and soon started pushing the boundaries of video, performance, graphic design and cultural commentary as well. Ant Farm was most famous for the installation art/architecture piece Cadillac Ranch outside Amarillo. Lord went on to produce his own video art and media-based installations. He is currently a Professor Emeritus in Film and Digital Media at U.C. Santa Cruz.On Friday, Sept. 30, Lord will present the lecture “From Ant Farm to YouTube: The Multi-Media Practice of Chip Lord” at UNM’s Artslab from 1 to 3pm. Admission is free and open to the public. In addition to lecturing about his career, Lord will present some of his recent media work. On Saturday, Oct. 1, Lord will show off his experimental 1989 road movie Motorist at the Graft Gallery (1415 Fourth Street SW) starting at 7:30pm. A $5 suggested donation gets you in the door for that event. Finally, on Sunday, Oct. 2, Lord will be at Guild Cinema (3405 Central NE) to present Greetings From Amarillo, a “video portrait” of his hometown of Amarillo, made in conjunction with musician Hayden Pedigo. Lord will introduce the film and Pedigo will be on hand to provide live accompaniment on acoustic guitar. This will be preceded by “Cadillac Ranch, 1974/1994,” Lord’s short documentary shot at the 20th anniversary party for Cadillac Ranch. All seats for this Guild Cinema event are $8. This Friday is the last Civic Plaza Friday of the summer 2016 season. It starts off at 5pm with ABQ Food Fridays. This pop-up happy hour will feature food by Delish restaurant, and a selection of beers from Rio Bravo Brewing Company, Marble Brewery and La Cumbre Brewing Co. Live music will come courtesy of the folk-flavored pop of The Real Matt Jones. At dusk (around 8pm), the city will present a free outdoor screening of the 1992 baseball comedy/drama A League of Their Own starring Tom Hanks, Geena Davis and Madonna. Some seating is available, but feel free to bring your own. It all goes down on Civic Plaza in downtown Albuquerque.
