Starting Friday, April 24, Guild Cinema (3405 Central NE) will begin playing The Wrecking Crew, a documentary about the legendary group of studio musicians who helped pioneer pop music’s “West Coast Sound.” The film is produced and directed by Denny Tedesco, the son of late Wrecking Crew guitarist Tommy Tedesco—who played with everybody from Frank Sinatra to The Beach Boys. On Saturday, April 25, from 3 to 5pm, there will be a meet and greet reception with the director (and some surprise musicians) at Roma Bakery and Deli (501 Roma NW). Mr. Tedesco will then head over to the Guild for the 5:45pm screening of The Wrecking Crew. Oldies station KDSK Radio (92.7 FM) will be doing a live broadcast from the Guild, and KDSK DJ “Insane” Darrell Wayne will be conducting a post-film Q&A with the director-producer. Seating is limited, so get to the Guild box office for tickets.

Downtown Albuquerque’s KiMo Theatre will take part in ArtsUnexpected, a citywide “pop-up art festival” featuring “various UNM student art projects in unexpected places.” This means the front windows of the KiMo (located at 423 Central NW) will feature a special video installation from student filmmakers. The installation will be projected from Thursday, April 23, through Saturday, April 25. Organizers believe this will allow passersby to enjoy ArtsUnexpected “as they go about their lives.” Check it out while you can, and visit artsunexpected.unm.edu for more info.

Alibi Midnight Movie Madness returns this weekend, April 24 and 25, at 10:30pm, with the latest feature film by cult animator Bill Plympton (“25 Ways to Quit Smoking,” “Guard Dog,” Idiots & Angels, I Married a Strange Person!, Mutant Aliens, Hair High). Cheatin’ is a wordless film noir love story about an insecure woman who spies on her faithless lover with the help of a disgraced magician. As a bonus, we’ll also show Plympton’s award-winning short “Footprints.” Local art gallery/boutique Stranger Factory will be handing out cool door prizes. And to top it all off, Plympton himself has sent along eight limited-edition, hand-signed art prints from the film. We’ll be raffling those off to ticket holders on Friday and Saturday nights. Director Susan Seidelman’s 2011 film Musical Chairs will be screened at 1pm on Saturday, April 25, at the South Broadway Cultural Center (1025 Broadway SE). Seidelman is most famous as the director behind Madonna’s movie debut, 1985’s Desperately Seeking Susan. Musical Chairs is being presented by USA Dance, Chapter 5047, and the screening will feature a special performance by Keshet Dance Company followed by a reception. The film is described as a “unique blend of dance, drama and romance.” It concerns a dance teacher who ends up in the hospital after an accident and is persuaded to enter an upcoming wheelchair ballroom dancing contest.
