The 2010 edition of the genre-crazed independent film festival TromaDance New Mexico starts up this weekend at Guild Cinema in Nob Hill. The festival launches on Friday, Dec. 10, at 7 p.m. with the Troma Entertainment trash classic Tromeo & Juliet, followed by an opening-night screening of Alejandro Jodorowsky’s Catholic Church-meets-freakshow freak-out Santa Sangre. Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 11 and 12, are filled with blocks of shorts as well as local premieres of the slasher flick Exhibit A-7 and the comic art documentary Grant Morrison: Talking With Gods. Locally shot comedy In Trouble and New Mexico-lensed action flick A Lonely Place For Dying will also be screened. Tickets and passes are available at the Guild box office (3405 Central NE).
The New Mexico film industry will pay tribute to outgoing Gov. Bill Richardson on Sunday, Dec. 12. Comedian Paul Rodriguez will serve as master of ceremonies over the star-studded event from 7 to 9 p.m. at Bishop’s Lodge Ranch Resort & Spa in Santa Fe. Bryan Cranston, Shirley MacLaine, Wes Studi and Val Kilmer are expected to make appearances. Why not add your name to the list (and issue a silent prayer that incoming Gov. Susana Martinez doesn’t gut the industry)? Tickets to the private, pre-show reception and reserved seating will cost you $100. General admission to the event is $25. Tickets must be purchased by 5 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 9. To reserve a seat, call (505) 986-9512 ext. 207.
On Sunday, Dec. 12, Friends of Film, Video and Arts will host its monthly meeting—which doubles as the organization’s fifth anniversary celebration! The topic of this month’s meeting is “101 Things to Know About Shooting Your Feature on Greenscreen.” Filmmakers Fritz Eberle and Russell Maynor will be showing highlights from their green-screen feature Malice in Wonderland: The Dolls Movie. The filmmakers will share the many hurdles they encountered in shooting the film and how they were solved (or not). The meeting takes place from 3 to 5:30 p.m. at Harwood Art Center (1114 Seventh Street NW) in the main floor’s south room. Social time, short-film screenings and the lecture program are on the docket. This meeting is free to current FFVA members or $10 at the door for strangers.
