The Albuquerque Film & Music Experience may be over for 2019, but the festival’s partnership with the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science Foundation continues this Friday, Oct. 4, with a screening of Pixar’s beloved animated adventure tale Up. Showing up just in time for Albuquerque’s annual International Balloon Fiesta, the 2009 film tells the story of an elderly widower who goes on one last adventure, tying a bunch of balloons to his house and flying off to a faraway, South American plateau. The film screens in the NMMNH’s DynaTheater (1801 Mountain Road NW) starting at 7pm. Tickets are $10 general admission or $7.50 for AFME sponsors and museum foundation members. Reel World: Glow In The Dark Glow In The Dark
Learn your atomic history at the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History with “Nuclear After Dark” this Friday, Oct. 4. On the evening in question, the museum welcomes visitors with live music (from Jo Aragon and the Mean Street Band), beer (from Bombs Away Beer Company), a selection of food trucks and a screening of History Channel’s 45-minute “Modern Marvels” documentary about the Manhattan Project. Doors open at 5:30pm, giving visitors time to explore the museum’s many exhibits. The movie begins at dusk and takes place outside, under the wings of the airplanes in the museum’s Heritage Park. Mayor Tim Keller in partnership with PegaWhale Storytellers present the premiere of Sudden Change: A New Mexico Documentary at the KiMo Theatre on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 4 and 5 starting at 7pm. Sudden Change is a 65-minute documentary pilot (for a proposed seven-part documentary series) that uses “intimate storytelling and filmmaking” to unearth narratives exploring “the rich diversity and resilience of New Mexico and its people.” The documentary centers on the New Mexico Gladiators indoor football team, its strong-willed female owner and the various stories of struggle and triumph within the team’s diverse ranks. Reel World: Fiesta Of Balloons Fiesta Of Balloons
If you just can’t get enough of balloons this time of year, you might want to swing by the KiMo Theatre this Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 7, 8 and 9. The City of Albuquerque is screening a feature-length documentary by Emi Tatayama called Wind Riders. The film presents the “poignant and inspiring” stories of three American balloonists—a solo hot-air balloon pilot and a pair of gas-balloon champions—who dedicate their lives to their high-flying sport. Screenings start at 7pm each night. Monday night tickets are $15 and include a Q&A with filmmakers and cast. Tuesday and Wednesday tickets are $12 and can be purchased in advance at kimotickets.com.
