The South Broadway Cultural Center goes sci-fi on Friday, Feb. 7, with the world premiere screening of the short film “Void.” This ambitious digital short was written, produced and directed by local filmmaker Justin Golightly and relates the emotional story of an astronaut who escapes a catastrophic disaster in deep space and then uses the memories of his wife back on Earth to guide his crippled spaceship home. It features New Mexico actors Will Arute and Catherine Pilafas. The 25-minute film will screen two times, at 6:15 and 8:20pm. Admission is free. Cast and crew will be in attendance. This premiere screening is part of the “Peripheral Edges” art exhibit, which spotlights a number of local artists—so be sure to wander the Cultural Center’s gallery before and/or after the movie. Reel World: Pedro + Poe Pedro + Poe
KiMo Theatre’s “Thursdays With Pedro” series continues this Thursday, Feb. 6, with Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar’s painfully creepy 2011 medical thriller The Skin I Live In. The film, starring Antonio Banderas as a mad scientist who goes waaay too far in his quest for revenge, starts at 7pm. KiMo’s “Friday Fright Nights” also keeps up the scares with the Poe & Price Festival. This week (Feb. 7) Edgar Allan Poe and Vincent Price join forces for the memorable 1964 shocker The Masque of the Red Death. The film, featuring some of the most memorable images of director Roger Corman’s many Poe adaptations, starts at 8pm. Tickets are $5 students/seniors and $7 general admission for either film.
Reel World: Act Out Act Out
The New Mexico Acting Studio has opened up registration for its Spring 2014 Scene Study Acting Class. Instructor/filmmaker Holly Adams will teach an introduction to Sanford Meisner’s approach to “acting in the moment.” The 10-week class touches on monologue coaching, audition techniques and scene study. The whole thing will end with a student showcase. The studio is accepting students aged 12 to adult. Classes will take place Wednesdays, Feb. 12 through April 29 at Nob Hill Studios (4401 Central NE, Suite A). Cost is $350, and all students must register prior to the start of classes.

The Seth MacFarlane comedy Western A Million Ways to Die in the West has sent out a casting call for an upcoming round of reshoots. Producers are looking for “male little people” for a scene to be shot in the Santa Fe area—tentatively scheduled for Feb. 18. These are paid positions and “a great opportunity for on-camera time with wonderful actors like Charlize Theron and Seth MacFarlane.” … Kinda makes me wonder about the test screening for studio brass that ended up with note: “Great movie, but needs more little people.”
