The shot-in-New-Mexico drama Warrior Woman by writer-director Julie Reichert will have its debut screening January 19 through 21 at Guild Cinema in Nob Hill. The film tells the story of a breast cancer survivor (played by Karen Young) whose marriage and finances fall apart. Emotionally raw and tormented by vivid dreams, she heads out into the desert on a journey of self-discovery. Reichert and her cast will be on hand for each of the screenings. DVDs of the film will also be available for sale at the discounted price of $5 to ticket holders. On Sunday, Jan. 20, however, there’s a little something extra. Reichert will be joined by Eleanor Schick, coordinator of support services for Cancer Support Now, Inc.—a membership-based nonprofit organization created by cancer survivors and their families. Schick will speak and answer questions from the audience. On that day, half of admission proceeds will go to Cancer Support Now. A good movie and a good cause? Sounds like a winner.
Reel World: Sub Cinema Sub Cinema
The Student Union Building Theater at UNM fires up its projectors again, just in time for a new semester. And it’s looking like the theater will have a full seven-day schedule this semester. The People Before Profit Film Series already got underway on Jan. 14 with The Battle of Algiers. This socially conscious film series is free to the public every Monday at 7 p.m. The next P.B.P. movie will be Ghandi on Jan. 28. Mid-Week Movies, sponsored by the Student Activities Center, returns on Tuesday, Jan. 22, with the animated feature Hotel Transylvania. Tickets are $2 for UNM students and $3 for the general public. Mid-Week Movies, featuring second-run showings of top Hollywood features, screen every Tuesday (8 p.m.), Wednesday (4 and 7 p.m.) and Thursday (3:30 p.m.). Rounding out the weekend (Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays) will be the ASUNM Southwest Film Center selections ($3 students, $5 general public). SWFC has yet to announce its schedule, but is expected to begin showing off some fine independent and foreign films by the end of the month. Go to swfc.unm.edu for complete schedules.
Reel World: Social Distortion Social Distortion
New Mexico Women in Film will hold its next meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 22, at the Center for Contemporary Arts (1050 Old Pecos Trail) in Santa Fe. The evening starts with a meet-and-greet reception from 6:30 to 7 p.m. At 7 p.m., there will be a panel presentation on social media marketing. Guest speakers Robin Roffer (Big Fish Marketing), Kalyn Bastion (Social Media Pathways) and Jordan Guenther (digital media master, NM Tourism Office) will discuss what new tools, processes and trends will drive social media in the coming years, and how you can use them to market your film projects and yourself. Admission is free for NMWIF members or $15 for nonmembers.
