Reel World: Crazy Enough For Ya? Crazy Enough For Ya?
The New Mexico Museum of Natural History Foundation and the Albuquerque Film & Music Experience return for another Big Screen/Big Sound event at the NMMNH’s DynaTheater. This Saturday, May 25, the Academy Award-winning 1975 film One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest screens starting at 7pm. Jack Nicholson stars as author Ken Kesey’s iconic (and semi-autobiographical) antihero Randle P. McMurphy, sent to an oppressive mental institution where he proceeds to rebel against medical authorities. The film was nominated for nine Oscars and took home Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay. Reel World: We Want Billy We Want Billy
Alhough it’s great that Netflix and other Hollywood studios are employing our city and state as a backdrop and providing New Mexican talent with regular employment, honest-to-goodness New Mexico born-and-bred film and TV products remain a rarity in the broader entertainment marketplace. That’s why it’s always a treat to report on a local project when it receives nationwide attention. The local producing/directing team of Michael Anthony Guidicissi and Jason Hill recently announced that their new time travel Western series “Back to Billy” has found a home on Amazon Prime Video. Filmed in Santa Fe and Albuquerque last summer, the show’s pilot episode focuses on bland, middle-class nobody Martin Teebs (Carlsbad actor Royd McCardish) who becomes obsessed with notorious Wild West gunslinger Billy the Kid. While on a trip to historic Lincoln County, Teebs finds himself sent back in time to 1878 and becoming an unwitting part of the Lincoln County War. Approximately 20 New Mexico actors and 20 New Mexico crew members were employed in the making of “Back to Billy.” The first episode of the series is available now for free on Amazon Prime. The remaining nine episodes are currently in preproduction.
Reel World: Get Short Get Short
The 48 Hour Film Project is returning to New Mexico. Open registration started on Tuesday, May 21. This chaotic cinematic event takes place the weekend of July 26 through 28. Registrants have exactly 48 hours to write, cast, direct, score, edit and premiere a 10-minute film. Assemble your team of crack filmmakers now and get ready for the fun. Each team is given a line of dialogue, a character, a prop and a random genre to work into their original screenplay. The films (the finished ones, anyway) will be screened to the public and judged by a panel of industry experts. The winning film from Albuquerque goes on to compete against films from around the world at Filmapalooza 2020 in the Netherlands for a chance at the grand prize and an opportunity to screen at the Cannes Film Festival 2020 Short Film Corner.
