Anyone who’s gone to college at UNM or spent time in the university area should be familiar with Louie’s Rock-N-Reels. For more than 20 years, owner Louie Torres has been vending classic and current movie posters, concert posters and movie memorabilia. Cinema-loving students have been decorating their dorm rooms with his posters since the ’90s. The store has bounced around locations several times, but has been at its current digs on Harvard Mall for the past several years. Since the ongoing ART construction started clogging up Central Avenue, however, Torres has seen a 50 to 60 percent drop off in business. He’s not the only one, of course, but the past year has been lean for his store. A passionate movie and music fan, Torres wants to keep his business afloat. In order to help pay his rent, he’s started two money-raising efforts. The first is a GoFundMe account that will hopefully help cover some back rent on the store. The other is a very cool holiday raffle. In celebration of the new Star Wars film, The Last Jedi, hitting theaters this Dec. 15, Louie’s Rock-N-Reels is raffling off a very rare and very valuable Revenge of the Jedi poster. Longtime Star Wars fans will recall that 1983’s Return of the Jedi was originally called Revenge of the Jedi until George Lucas changed his mind. A handful of Revenge of the Jedi teaser posters leaked out to movie theaters before the name change, however. Torres will be raffling off one of these original, recalled movie posters. Tickets are $20 each or three for $50. Second place prize will be an original “bus shelter” movie poster for Star Wars: Episode II: Attack of the Clones featuring artwork by legendary movie poster artist Drew Struzan. Third place will be an original double-sided movie poster for Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Reel World: Hit The Road Hit The Road
The KiMo Theater (423 Central Ave. SW) is closing out its series of “Pulitzer Prize-winning books on screen” with a showing of the 2009 sci-fi drama The Road. The film is an adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s harrowing novel about a father (Viggo Mortensen) and son (Kodi Smit-McPhee) who try to survive in a cataclysmic post-apocalyptic world. The film will screen Sunday, Nov. 26 at 2pm. Admission is free.

The 3rd Annual Las Cruces International Film Festival (scheduled for March 7 through 11, 2018) is looking for submissions. Categories include Narrative Feature, Documentary Feature, Narrative Short, Documentary Short, Student Film, New Mexico-Made, Veteran-Made, Music Video and Animated. Submission fees range from free (Veteran-Made) to $70 (Feature narrative). The festival’s extended submission deadline runs out this Saturday, Nov. 25. Selected films will be notified by Dec. 15.
