The 3rd Thursday event at Albuquerque Museum salutes Women in Film as part of the museum’s new Hollywood Southwest: New Mexico in Film and Television exhibit. Foley artist Lara Dale will be on hand at 7pm this Thursday, March 16, to talk about her career—which has included work on Conan the Barbarian, The Expendables 1 through 3 and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. Dale will give a hands-on demonstration using props to show how she creates background sounds for major motion pictures. There will be live music and performances, hands-on kids’ activities and a “Women in Film” scavenger hunt in the gallery. Admission is free from 5 to 8:30pm. Reel World: Act Up Act Up
The New Mexico Film Foundation brings back the popular New Mexico Actors Showcase this Friday, March 17, from 6:30 to 9:30pm at the South Broadway Cultural Center (1025 Broadway SE). The top 25 finalists in this year’s contest will appear on stage, directed by film director/producer/writer Jocelyn Jansons. Each will perform live monologues to show off their acting skills. Judging will be conducted by local casting directors. Directors, producers, fellow actors and members of the general public are invited to check out this showcase of talent. The DynaTheater in the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science is opening a new educational film this Saturday, March 18. Galapagos: Nature’s Wonderland 3D is a 40-minute documentary written by renowned naturalist David Attenborough. Naturally, it explores the Galapagos archipelago with its unique selection of plants and animals—filmed for the first time in 4K 3D using state-of-the-art digital filmmaking technology. The popular Italian Film & Culture Festival returns to Albuquerque Tuesday, March 21, through Sunday, March 26. This year’s 10th annual outing will bring in another strong lineup of recent, award-winning and highly acclaimed Italian films for their local premieres. All films will be screened in Italian with English subtitles. Things start out on Tuesday, March 21, at 5pm with “L’Inaugurazione,” a grand opening party with a buffet and wine reception catered by Scalo Northern Italian Grill, followed by the simpaticissimo duo of Donatella and Ennio and a live dance performance by NDI New Mexico. The evening’s festivities are capped off at 6:45pm with a screening of the Opening Night film Noi e la Giulia (The Legendary Giulia and Other Miracles). This 2015 comedy concerns a group of strangers who go into business, hoping to transform an abandoned farmhouse into an agriturisma destination. Tickets for the party and the film can be purchased separately or together. Other highlights include the horse-racing documentary Palio, the Gulf War drama Una Storia Sbagliata (Another South) and the contemporary fairy tale Io, Arlecchino (I, Harlequin). The closing night film/dinner event includes a screening of the social comedy Il Nome del Figlio (An Italian Name), in which an expecting couple’s friendly dinner party devolves into mayhem when they announce the name they’ve chosen for their baby. All films and events—other than the “Il Gran Finale” dinner at Scalo Northern Italian Grill—will be held at the historic Hiland Theater (4800 Central SE. Tickets are $10 online or $12 at the door.
