This Friday is Employee Appreciation Day. The New Mexico Natural History Museum Foundation and the Albuquerque Film + Music Experience are celebrating this unofficial holiday by pairing up and screening a workplace comedy fave. This Friday, March 1, starting at 7pm, the NMMNH’s DynaTheater shows off the hit 1980 comedy 9 to 5. Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda and Dolly Parton star as a trio of secretaries who decide to get revenge against their sexist pig of a boss (Dabney Coleman). Attendees can check out coffee samplings from Sol Rio Coffee, and organizers will be giving away an autographed script from the film! Reel World: Catch “¡Colores!” Catch “¡Colores!”
Albuquerque’s Special Collections Library (423 Central Ave. NE) offers up a free, public screening of two PBS “¡COLORES!” documentaries on Saturday, March 2. Starting at 2pm, audiences are invited to watch the locally produced docs “Sleeping Monsters, Sacred Fires: Volcanoes of New Mexico” and “High Desert Trout”—covering our state’s geological history and the mystique of fly-fishing, respectively.
Reel World: Heal The Sick Heal The Sick
New Mexico PBS and the Institute of American Indian Arts present a free, pop-up film screening this Sunday, March 3. From 6 to 8pm, the IAIA Auditorium in the school’s Library and Technology Center features a preview of the PBS documentary The Providers. Set against the backdrop of the physician shortage as well as the opioid crisis in rural America, this locally lensed documentary follows three “country doctors” as they struggle to help patients at low-to-no-cost clinics throughout New Mexico. Following the screening is a post-film panel discussion about health care options and access in New Mexico. Food provided by Café Bon Appetit. IAIA is located at 83 A Van Nu Po Road in Santa Fe.
Reel World: Local And Independant Local And Independant
The New Mexico Film Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering the independent film industry in our state, heads to Santa Fe’s Jean Cocteau Cinema this Tuesday, March 5, for a screening of recent New Mexico filmmakers’ shorts and trailers. This “NMFF Indie Screening” allows the public to see some of the projects our local filmmakers are working on. It also gives the filmmakers the opportunity to see their work on the big screen and to receive feedback from real audiences. Among the pieces being shown is a music video by Santa Fe musician David Berkeley utilizing a 41-foot watercolor created by Santa Fe artist Stan Berning and featured in the 2014 Sam Elliot/Joan Allen film Off the Map. The event takes place from 5 to 7pm. Admission is $5. The Jean Cocteau Cinema is located at 418 Montezuma. If you can’t make it up to the City Different, the Indie Screening will pop down to Albuquerque’s UNM Conference Center Auditorium (1634 University Blvd. NE) on Saturday, March 9 starting at 6:30pm.
