Thursday 16

Atari: Game Over (Showtime 6:30pm) This documentary about the mythical burial of thousands of unsold “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” game cartridges in the desert outside Alamogordo is must-see viewing for a number of reasons: the local historical angle, the long-overdue vindication of programmer Howard Scott Warshaw and the fact that a certain Alibi film and television writer appears once or twice babbling about his obsession with the Atari 2600.

“Shannon & Sophie” (UP 7pm) Shannon Tweed and Sophie Tweed-Simmons, the wife and daughter of KISS founder Gene Simmons, get their own spin-off reality show. Just as god and man intended.

“Animation Domination” (FXX 10pm) The FXX late-night animation block adds “Major Lazer,” previously known only as a mysterious dancehall/moombahton collaboration between American DJ Diplo and various other producers. Now it’s a cartoon show about a Jamaican superhero who fights against dystopian forces. Makes perfect sense to me.

Friday 17

“Cedric’s Barber Battle” (KWBQ-19 7pm) Cedric the Entertainer hosts a reality show competition in which barbers … yeah, compete to see who can cut hair the best. I’m not so sure that “Entertainer” part applies much these days.

“The Messengers” (KWBQ-19 8pm) A mysterious object falls to Earth causing the deaths—and resurrections—of five strangers. Now all they’ve got to do is prevent the Rapture from happening. Parts of this one were shot here in New Mexico. Although The CW’s placement of it immediately after a haircutting competition doesn’t seem very confident.

Saturday 18

“Orphan Black” (BBC America/AMC 8pm) BBC America gives a boost to the season 3 premiere of its addictive sci-fi thriller by simulcasting it on AMC.

“2015 TV Land Awards” (TV Land 7pm) Terry Crews hosts. The casts of “Freaks and Geeks” and “The Wonder Years” reunite. Everybody gets statues.

“Tatau” (BBC America 8pm) No, not the faux-lesbian Russian pop group from 2002, but a murder mystery set on the Cook Islands.

Sunday 19

“The 50th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards” (KRQE-13 7pm) Blake Shelton hosts. As expected.

Monday 20

“Time Traveling with Brian Unger” (Travel 8pm) Yeah. Wouldn’t be my first choice. I’d have to go with Donald Glover or Neil deGrasse Tyson.

“StarTalk” (National Geographic 9pm) Comedians and celebrities of “media, science and pop culture” discuss science and technology in NGC’s casual new chat show. First up, the moral and social issues of today as seen through “Star Trek.” The special guest, appropriately enough, is George Takei.

Tuesday 21

“Last Days of the Nazis” (History 7pm) History Channel goes full-circle, looping back around to the 24-hour-a-day World War II station it was born to be.

Wednesday 22

“The Prancing Elites Project” (Oxygen 11pm) A gay, African-American, “gender non-conforming” dance group from Mobile, Ala., headlines this docureality series about the world of “J-setting.” It’s a thing.
