Starting with this issue of the Alibi , you may notice a distinct decrease in the amount of work coming from our normally reliable film editor, Devin D. O’Leary. Mr. O’Leary has neither died nor given up caring about his job. For the next five weeks, he will be on an extended sabbatical. He has shipped off to the Far East to teach an intensive summer course on Hong Kong film to a group of students from New Mexico State University’s Creative Media Institute. While in Hong Kong, this group will be meeting with members of the local film industry, visiting famed filming locations like the Shaw Brothers’ studio and viewing as many Asian films as humanly possible. By August, these students will return to New Mexico ready to apply all they’ve seen and learned to our state’s growing film industry. By August, Mr. O’Leary will return to writing snide comments about Adam Sandler movies. (DO’L)
Free! Films
Here’s something we wish happened more often: The KiMo Theatre is screening free movies every Saturday before Summerfest. This Saturday, July 12, the movie of the week is Silverado . On July 19, 26 and Aug. 2, it’s O Brother, Where Art Thou? , Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and Bella , respectively. Shows start at 4 p.m., and donations are greatly appreciated, as all proceeds will go directly to Albuquerque Healthcare for the Homeless. Summertime can often be full of free movies, but it’s rare to get them in as nice a venue as the beautifully historic and slightly creepy KiMo. (CC)

The early bird deadline for the Santa Fe Metaphysical Film Festival is Tuesday, July 15. Categories are: supernatural, indigenous ceremonies, cutting-edge science, extraterrestrial, science fiction and spiritual healing. Send submissions to: SFMFF, 638 Camino del Monte Sol, Santa Fe, N.M. 87505. Features and documentaries with run times of 60 to 140 minutes will be accepted, along with short films running 30 seconds to 59 minutes. The Book You Write
If you’re looking to hone your writing skills, Matthew McDuffie is leading “an intensive and intimate” workshop for novelists, screenwriters and playwrights this Saturday, July 19, and Sunday, July 20. McDuffie teaches in UNM’s Dramatic Writing Program and has written for HBO, Showtime and Warner Bros. and for projects such as “ER,” “Six Feet Under” and Capote . The workshop takes place at UNM’s Arts Lab (131 Pine NE) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own material to develop throughout the course.
