A Season Forecast Of The Santa Fe Area’s Fruitful Growers’ Markets

Stuffed and contented is the food-lover that finds herself in Santa Fe. There are the world-class restaurants, to be sure, and the rogue, rule-bending chefs that have put them on the map. There are bedrock institutions like The Santa Fe School of Cooking, the pervasiveness of ingredients like piñon and blue corn, and community action groups like Kitchen Angels that feed souls as much as stomachs. Those are each well-worth the trip alone.

But even more deliciously under the radar are Santa Fe area growers’ markets, some of the most well-rounded markets in the state, with an amazing variety of top-shelf seasonal produce and homespun agricultural products.

Northern New Mexico’s late-summer harvest means bushels of apples and pears, crates of fennel, okra by the basketful and the season’s long-anticipated, first crop of red and green chiles. Rise with the sun for the best selection of fresh produce, or shop late in the day for deals when farmers are looking to unload the last of their haul.
