Don’t spend Black Friday waiting in line at the crack of dawn to buy Chinese-made electronics. Instead, wake up at a more reasonable hour and stop by Mecca (1404 Central SW), where you can wish mazel tov to Rocky and his crew for 10 years in the CD, tape, vinyl and used book business. (Then go ahead and buy something, as long as it’s not Chinese Democracy by Guns N’ Roses.) Happy anniversary, Mecca!
All your old buddies are in town for the holiday–why not tie one on Downtown this Friday, when your options are good and plentiful? These are my picks. The most hallowed of Albuquerque post-Thanksgiving traditions, Socyermom Records’ Turkey Purge returns to the Launchpad (Central and Seventh Street SW) with all the trimmings. Ends !n Tragedy, Rebilt, Dead on Point 5, World On Fyre and Volume Volume share the bill (21+, doors open at 8 p.m., cover not available at press time). Then head next door to El Rey Theater (21+, $7), where The Ghost of Dragstrip Hollow screens with live music by Le Chat Lunatique, Swingin’ Meat and The Hydromatics. You could see Gwar soil the Sunshine Theater (Central and Second Street SW, all-ages, 7:30 p.m.) for $19, or The Dirty Fucking Rhondas release its new album at Atomic Cantina (Gold between Fourth and Third Streets, 21+) for free. For one week only, Lipp Servus –Thursday night’s proto-rock dance party–has moved to Friday at Blackbird Buvette (Central between Fifth and Sixth Streets, 21+, free). For emo kids stuck in the Northeast Heights , you can’t go wrong with Saturday Night Riot, Scarlet Rise, Atlas, Down from the Sky, and Alone, We Walk the Shore for $7 at The Compound (3206 San Mateo NE, all-ages). That one starts at 7 p.m.
The deadline for the International Songwriting Competition is Monday, Dec. 1. The competition is seeking original music in 20 genre categories from amateur and professional artists. $150,000 in cash and prizes will be awarded to 62 winners–but even cooler than the booty is who’ll be listening to you. The large judging panel includes music industry giants like Tom Waits, Robert Smith, Loretta Lynn, Neil Finn, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ray Davies, Darryl McDaniels (Run DMC) and Black Francis/Frank Black. Producer Steve Lillywhite is on there, as are top executives from Universal, Virgin, Sony BMG and MySpace Records, Putumayo World Music, and VH1 and MTV. Even "Weird Al" Yankovic and Dr. Demento will be listening in. Visit songwritingcompetition.com by Monday for rules and an entry form.
