The antique imagery associated with steampunk subculture is easy to scare up. Gears and iron and smokestacks of the Industrial Revolution come alive. Those manipulating the machines are buttoned up in black cloth; upright Europeans of the Victorian age who purse their lips, feverishly trying to decode a scientific mystery in service of a better tomorrow … Back to the Future Part III also comes to mind. But what does steampunk sound like? On Friday, Nov. 11—that’s 11 • 11 • 11, for those who get excited about the lining up of consecutive numbers in the Gregorian calendar—the Alibi’s Group Hug aims to find out at Captain Lionel Gearpunk’s Steam-Powered Ball. The captain has amassed a smoldering lineup of music from the Squash Blossom Boys, The Ladies’ Society of Grenadiers, Small Game and DJ Caterwaul. In addition, burlesque acrobatics will be executed by September Smith and Godiva Bleu; dances will be performed by Bianca Lily and Strong Man Sam. A costume contest will be conducted as well, so come dressed in your finest top hat, your tatted collar, your scratchiest woolen wear and your ray-beam monocle.
