Local metal fest Crust in the Dust is hosting a crabwalk—a round robin and collaborative performance wherein the audience sits dead center—to raise funds for a generator to power their late-August loudness war. The benefit’s all-star avant lineup includes: booty bass/noise act Bigawatt, Old Town grindcore fivesome Laughing Dog, blackened crust crew Hanta, crust/sludge outfit Brain Rot and progressive/melodic metal foursome Futilitarian. Pack your earplugs and a $5 donation and give back while getting a brain massage on Friday, July 26, at the Albuquerque Center for Peace and Justice (202 Harvard SE). Nine-time Grammy-winning pianist and bandleader Eddie Palmieri and his Latin jazz band bring their intoxicating blend of Afro-Cuban rhythms and funky jazz to the Lensic Peforming Arts Center (211 West San Francisco, Santa Fe) on Saturday, July 27. If you’re hankering for a gig that combines flawless chops and a serious pedigree—Palmieri was named 2013 National Endowment of the Arts Jazz Master—with a chance to mingle amongst fellow jazz-fusion fans, this is that show. Along with Palmieri’s peerless piano work, his Latin Jazz Band features trumpet, alto sax, bongos, congas, timbales and bass. ArtBar’s Shastyn Friedman on 10 Drink Minimum
Long-running Burqueño podcast 10 Drink Minimum—aka the last party of the weekend—has been the passion project of Chris Burnett for eight years. Local musician Billy Bellmont joined the fun a couple years ago. Originally scheduled for Tuesday nights, the duo switched to Sundays about a year ago. Burnett explained the show’s name is self-mocking, referencing comedy clubs’ three-drink minimum. I’ve tuned in to their webcast pretty regularly. While the tone of humor veers toward the jocular, both Burnett and Bellmont are savvy hosts. Their first live show—in front of an actual audience—happens at ArtBar by Catalyst Club (119 Gold SW) at 8 p.m. on Sunday, July 28. To get in, you must be an ArtBar member or get signed in by one. Portlander industrial collagist Lavas Magmas aka Luis Gonzalez creates ochre-colored scrap metal and oscillation-based tape music composition. Lavas Magmas is on tour with fellow Portland act Lifestyle Pornography—I hear a lot of band names, and this one is stellar—and the groups’ tour hits Burque next week. Performing at temporary Postcommodity art space Spirit Abuse (1103 Fourth Street NW) on Tuesday, July 30, the Vitamin D-deficient artists are joined by the triumphant return of Father of the Flood and a rare New Mexico appearance by William Fowler Collins. This all-ages recital cranks up at 9 p.m., and admission is only $5.
