“Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends/ We’re so glad you could attend/ Come inside! Come inside!”—Emerson, Lake & Palmer, “Karn Evil 9”

As autumn spreads its bountiful, sun-vanquishing wings across our humble burg, be of good cheer, concert-seeking sojourners. A horn of plenty filled to the brim with incomparable musical diversions awaits your indulgence. You’re only a short ride away from experiencing the truth about the music community here, there and everywhere. Before you take off on this particular flight of fancy, consider this: It’ll be damned good, and the price you’ll pay is a mere token of the joyful experiences to be had.

Music To Your Ears Grrrls Just Want To Resound

Check out the ultimate, brain-melting apex of Gatas y Vatas at The Kosmos (1715 Fifth Street NW) on Friday, Sept. 19, and Saturday, Sept. 20. Gatas y Vatas is a festival of female experimentalists whose humble beginnings belie the event’s global reach. Founded in 2010, this collection of the best avant-garde tuneage available anywhere has gathered momentum for the past several weeks; fundraisers and preview events set the tone for what promises to be a totally awesome festival of sight and sound.

Friday night features performances by local luminaries
Cthulha and Lady Uranium, as well as Carmina Escobar from Mexico City, Bay City’s Demonsleeper and Irish-Burqueña hybrid Colorado. Saturday evening’s lineup is also destined to confound expectations with sets by Syko Friend from the Twin Cities, Brooklynite Sarah Ibrahim and nuevomexicana mavens TAHNZZ and Bigawatt. Day passes are $10, and the all-festival pass is a bargain at $15. The doors to these substantive sonic situations open at 6pm on both evenings, and the sound takes over at 6:30pm. Music To Your Ears What The World’s Coming To

If globally is how you roll,
¡Globalquerque! 2014 offers an essential, Burque-style take on the power of world music. The National Hispanic Cultural Center (1701 Fourth Street SW) is the site of this year’s concoction of groovy international folk and dance music. The festival schedule is heaped sky-high with peerlessly capital acts.

Notable examples of this year’s premium program on three stages include Friday night recitals by
Afro-Cuban All Stars, guzheng virtuoso Liu Fang and DVA, a Czech postmodern tech-folk duo consisting of siblings Jan Kratochvíl and Bára Kratochvílová.

On Saturday night prepare for another evening of world-trotting tuneage with appearances by Guatemalan chanteuse
Gaby Moreno, visionary folk-punk ambassadors of Yiddish and Eastern European music Golem and multi-genre wanderers Lo’Jo, a sextet from Angers, France. A one-day ticket to ¡Globalquerque! 2014 costs $37, and a festival pass goes for just $59. That’s a small price to pay for an earthly vision on the banks of the Rio Grande. These are all-ages events. NHCC grounds open at 4pm both days, and the globe begins its procession toward light at 6:20pm on Friday, Sept. 19, and 6pm on Saturday, Sept. 20. Learn more at globalquerque.org.

It’s true that days are getting shorter, and nights begin to take up more of just about everybody’s time. Why not make the most of this seasonal succession? As EL&P once sang, “You’ve got to see the show/ It’s a dynamo.”
