No more hugs for BurqueNeed a hug and some food from a sweet young man named Tim? You’ll have to drive to Denver now because Tim’s Place (8050 Academy NE) is closing in Albuquerque. After giving out thousands of hugs to his customers, Tim Harris, owner of the “world’s friendliest restaurant,” is moving to Denver, Colo. and taking his restaurant with him. Reportedly, it’s so that he can be with his girlfriend. While I’m happy that he’s confident enough to leave a city where he’s established his life and business for the last five years, I don’t want him to go. Tim’s Place is comfortable and has excellent American and New Mexican comfort food. The last day of business will be Dec. 20. Lost loveHave you been meaning to eat at one of the best vegan places in town? Well, it’s too late now and it’s all your fault. Loving Vegan (3409 Central NE) closed their doors on Nov. 13. Well known for their vegan sushi, they will certainly be missed.The Thrill of eating and drinkingThe Thrillist, a “leading men’s digital lifestyle brand,” has been kind to Albuquerque recently. They ranked El Pinto Restaurant and Cantina (10500 Fourth Street NW) as the 14th best Mexican Restaurant in America and noted Burque as one of the most “criminally overlooked beer cities in the US.” In the Portland Thrillist, Albuquerque was earmarked as one of the places Portlandians are fleeing to because of our low-rent, the fantastic beer scene and our city’s biking culture. Miracles do happenThe Last Call has finally had the soft opening for their new Downtown location at 420 Central SW. It’s been rumored for a while that they were working on opening a new restaurant (with actual seating!) in the area but I can personally confirm, with pleasure, that they are in the space next to Effex on the corner of Fifth and Central. I imagine their business will be booming even more with all their delicious options available where most of the drunken people congregate in Albuquerque. Maybe they’ll be open during lunch time for all of us who work down here? (Pretty please?)And Actual Miracles Happen, TooNumerous organizations and stores like Random Acts (group of local firefighters) working with Boston Market, Lobo Food Pantry, Roadrunner Food Bank, Lindy’s Café and McDonalds (and surely several more) gave out Thanksgiving meals last week. Random Acts provided about 156 families with meals. This doesn’t include one-on-one donations, which I witnessed myself. I saw a man driving down Central in a large truck Thanksgiving morning who gave a meal to a person in need, so shout out to him.
