That said, here are this week’s maelstroms of meaning, lurking, as they may well be, in the dark but admittedly fecund existential pool of uncertainty.This week’s edition of the now legendary local music series Thursday Night Girl Fight comes full circle on Thursday, Feb. 21 at Launchpad (618 Central Ave. SW) with a night devoted to drag performances by Lady Shug, Moxie Glow, Jessica Stone DeLorean, Tsunami Couture, Kayla Chingada and Frida Steel Roxx. Music will be provided by forces of femme including K. Benally & Letsjusbe, Goddex and Coquito Papi. 9pm • $5 • 21+.Test your aural and cultural limits, improve your jazz vernacular and learn something about the scenes beyond the scene by checking out and jamming righteously to Bobcats Trio, an ensemble of noted Burque jazzers who will be releasing their latest CD Music for The Sole at a party to be held at the Holiday Dance Studio (5200 Eubank Blvd. NE) on Friday, Feb. 22. Led by longtime Burque reed expert and canny clarinetist Bob Gusch (he gets down with Debo in Suadade, among other projects), this ensemble makes some super solid swing. 8pm • $10 • All-ages.Now then, on Saturday, Feb. 23, it is just fine to proceed with your plans to put aside whatever happened in the past—even if it was danged danceable—in order to let a thing called punk rock properly manifest itself in the midst of your otherwise quiet and unassuming life. The revolutionary movement to dispel the spectres of the past whilst embracing the modest yet inherently worker friendly world we can all strive for should begin by attending a concert featuring Get Action, The Rebel Set, Shitty & the Terribles and SHREWD at Launchpad (618 Central Ave. SW). It should all come clear, comrades, when Get Action launches into “Back on the Wave.” 9pm • $5 in advance, $8 at the door • 21+.How about serving up that hot plate of punk rock with a hearty heapin’ of soul, something that’s, you know, Hard Sweet and Sticky, like Black Lightning, yo. Of course you’d be talking about a recipe known in the vernacular as The Bellrays. Of course they’re from Califas, bruh; the second name of that state has always been weird. Anyway, the very entertaining and sometimes wickedly enlightening band, led by Lisa Kekaula and featuring a zillion past members, will be gigging at Sister (407 Central Ave. NW) on Sunday, Feb. 24. Look out for tuneage like “Voodoo Train” and “Evil Morning.” Rawk! 8pm • $10 • 21+.
