The Rocksquawk Music Showcase: Saturday, August 27. The Alibi is trying its leathery hand at yet another Downtown music festival—the Rocksquawk Music Showcase! The idea is that the RMS will operate like a small-scale crawl with about half the bands, minimal lines and a cheap, one-time cover of $5. The top-secret lineup will be announced in the August 25 edition of the Weekly Alibi. Fare Thee Well … Former Stella Blue co-owner and full-time Dead Head Alisa Young says that Stella Blue may be down at the moment, but it's not necessarily out. Alisa and husband Jamie are in the process of selling the business to a new owner, but the pair will stay on as club consultants for the time being. Why the sudden change up? “It was just time,” says Alisa. “We hope to keep the jam band scene alive in Albuquerque, just not at that location.” Though Alisa couldn't go into any specifics, she says that we should see “another door open” in about six weeks. We'll keep you posted on whatever that turns out to be.

Cause For Alarm. Yes, it’s really true; Grants does have a hot scene. Go check it out for yourself at the Cause for Alarm Festival 2005, going down this Saturday, August 13, at the Grants Rodeo Grounds’ Cow Palace. According to the event’s promoter, the festival features up-and-coming bands from Arizona, California and New Mexico “that are on the verge of breaking out to the next level.” In this case, that means Minus Blindfold, Of One Less, Vistalance, Downspell, Coalition, a.m.breakup, Fate to Fall, 12 Ton Sledge, Suspended and Paranoic Critical. New Mexico Music Comes to the Fair. And I'm not talking about Al Hurricane, Jr., either. The city's New Mexico Music Commission will sponsor a battle of the bands-type showcase at this year's State Fair on Saturday, September 17. Bands will have the opportunity to duke it out within four main genres of music, including country and western, jazz and blues, ethnic and traditional, and rock. There are some sweet-ass prizes up for grabs, including studio time, bookings and a professional promotional package, but you've got to register by August 30 to even get in the running.
