“Euphoria” and Pulse Part Ways—New Mexico's premier gothic and industrial dance party is moving on to darker pastures, so to speak. Promoter Brad Cole says that after several years at Pulse Nightclub, “Euphoria” has been dissolved, renamed and relocated to Downtown's OPM Nightclub. The move is being engineered by Cole and resident DJs Kentifyr and Church, all of whom are deeply rooted in Albuquerque's gothic and industrial scene. And like a macabre phoenix risen from its own jet-black ashes, “this night has already gone through many types of incarnations and names, and no two are ever the same,” Cole says. “It's always a little different, which is a good thing.”

Burque's Thursday night tradition of gothic music and dancing began in 1990 at Maxwell's, a long-gone after-hours club in the Heights. The event has since been passed through several nightclubs, including Ritual (now Ned's Downtown), U.N. (now OPM), the Sunshine Theatre and Pulse. “But it's outlasted every venue,” says the nearly 20-year veteran of the club business. Cole is a staunch supporter of all-ages venues and events, and says that while the new venture at OPM is 21-and-older, he hopes to return to the night's popular 18-and-older format soon. In the meantime, admission is free. And how will all this sit with OPM's notoriously strict dress code? “We basically have one, too,” Cole says. “It's called ’black.'”

Weird—According to an article in the Aug. 29 edition of the Albuquerque Tribune, former Club R&B owner Dana Jarvis is alleged to have run a “marijuana and money-laundering ring that stretched across at least five states and amassed more than $49 million in profits. …” This bit of news leads me to two conclusions: 1) If you're a musician in New Mexico, better think twice about quitting your day job, and 2) I'm in the wrong line of business. Anyhow, Dana was indicted with 20 other defendants in connection with the allegation. There will be more weirdness to come, I'm sure. Stay tuned.
