Born in New Mexico, Based in Austin — Rock ‘n’ rollers The Dirty Hearts may not live in New Mexico any more, but that doesn’t mean they can’t come back for a visit every now and again. The Dirty Hearts are originally from Española (Low Rider Capital of the Free World!), where they joined forces after each member’s former bands “either got jobs or pregnant” roundabouts of 2002. They’ve since moved on to the exponentially more fertile musical pastures of Austin, Texas, but they’ll be coming back New Mexico-way on Friday, Dec. 30. Too bad the gig’s in Santa Fe. Regardless, this band is worth the drive. They’ll play at the Second Street Brewery (1814 Second Street, Santa Fe) sometime after 9 p.m., along with singer-songwriters Calida and Billy Bartley. The Outpost is Rich! Rich Beyond Their Wildest Dreams!—Well, not really. But Outpost Productions did just snag a major four-year grant for a tidy of sum of $400,000. Outpost Productions is one of 17 performing arts organizations in the United States to obtain a Nonprofit Finance Fund (NFF) Mid-Size Performing Arts Presenting Organizations (MPO) Initiative, funded by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. A total of $9 million dollars was doled out to deserving arts presenters, who were reviewed by a highly competitive peer review panel before being selected by the NFF. Outpost representatives say that grant “will be instrumental in helping Outpost to maintain its excellent programming while ensuring a sound financial future for the organization.” To clarify, Outpost Productions is a nonprofit corporation based at the Outpost Performance Space, located at 210 Yale SE here in Albuquerque. Since its inception in 1988, the Outpost has prided itself on presenting a variety of quality, independent performances, including jazz, experimental, and folk and roots music, as well as spoken word, children’s shows, lecture-demonstrations, performance art and more.
