I’m happy to report that Wrangler’s (Fifth Street and Lead), a cherry of an inexpensive Downtown breakfast and lunch spot, has been approved for their liquor license– They’ve already added a small, umbrella-shaded patio to the front of the restaurant and hope to begin a dinner service with beer and wine later this week. They also have plans to open for dinner on the weekends with hours that compete for the bar crowd, until 1 or 2 a.m. Call 842-1600 for an update.

Olive You?– There’s a new Martini bar in the Heights called Olive, ostensibly a sidebar of Lucky’s Lounge. You can find both in the "L"-shaped strip mall on the southeast corner of Montgomery and Eubank. I haven’t been able to make it up there yet, but I love the name. Have you been? Is it any good? Getting Certified Just Got Easier– Obtaining my Alcohol Server Certification was, to my 19-year-old mind, a real pain in the ass. I hated waking up early, the format was boring and it took all day–on a precious free Saturday, no less. Looking back, I’m so glad I did it. Even though I’ve invariably worked in the back of the house (the kitchen side), my training has helped grease the door hinges of employment, not to mention guide me through a a sticky situation or two. If you work in the food service industry, getting Alcohol Server Certified is an absolute must.Happily, classes are now being offered on a weekly basis in Albuquerque by the New Mexico Restaurant Association (NMRA). (You used to have to wait up to a month to load into a class.) Sessions are $25 for Association members and $30 for everyone else. They’ve also begun to make them available in farther-away cities like Las Cruces, Anthony, Deming and T or C. Plus, if you log on to the NMRA website, you can get $5 off of any certification class held in Albuquerque. You can find them online at www.nmrestaurants.org.

Weekend Winos– In addition to the Albuquerque Wine Festival at Balloon Fiesta Park (See the "Lucky 7" listing in the front of the paper), you can sample even more wine on the cheap this Memorial Weekend–if you know where to look. Just take a tour of New Mexico and stop at the Southern New Mexico Wine Festival at the Southern NM State Fairgrounds just west of Las Cruces on I-10. Just like in Albuquerque, the southern fiesta will have a diverse lineup of live music, cottage industry products, food and, of course, lots of vino. Admission is even cheaper down south at $13 for adults 21-and-over and free for those under-21. There’s also a $3 discount for active duty military on Monday. Get tanked!
