More Santa Fe Seafood Comes to Albuquerque—Santa Fe’s popular Mariscos La Playa plans to open a restaurant on Albuquerque’s Westside this summer. A reader who used to live in Santa Fe called in to praise La Playa for their fresh seafood soups and traditional coastal Mexican fare. “It used to be my neighborhood Mexican place when I lived there,” she says. “I miss it!” Mariscos La Playa has been around for 10 years on Cordova Road in the City Different, and another store was opened in Española just a couple of years ago. Management in Santa Fe say that if everything goes as planned, their first Albuquerque restaurant will open at Central and Atrisco sometime in June.

505 Chile Factory and Restaurant Swaps Locations—505 Southwestern is celebrating their first- and second-place 2006 Scovie Awards at this year’s National Fiery Foods & Barbecue Show with some fancy new digs. The 505 Southwestern restaurant and chile factory used to be on Montgomery just west of San Pedro, but, according to 505 owner Roy Solomon, “we couldn’t really operate the way we wanted to up there.” After seven of their 13 years in that location, the entire operation moved down to 3313 Girard NE, just north of Candelaria.
Roy says that, unlike the last location, the new 505 has two separate rooms–one for manufacturing and another for dining. He also says they’ve acquired a tortilla machine, which means fresh tortillas made to order with each meal. Stop in for breakfast or lunch from 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on weekdays. Taste This, America!–Albuquerque will be the featured gastronomic destination on a new episode of the Travel Channel’s “Taste of America.” The show, which airs on Tuesday, April 25, features host Mark DeCarlo at Jane Butel’s Cooking School in downtown Burque. DeCarlo is an actor/comedian perhaps most famous for being easily confused with fellow mid-’90s observational shtickler Paul Reiser. This, of course, makes him a prime candidate for making sopaipillas on national television. Which they’ll probably try to bill as an authentic Southwestern “dessert.” Damn it all, when will they learn? You eat sopaipillas with the meal. With the meal! The show should be on at 9:30 p.m. our time, but check your listings to be sure.
