The Downtown Gold Avenue corridor has recently turned up the volume on its soulful side. New restaurant on the block,
Soul and Vine, features an “American tapas” style menu, carefully selected wines and a stylish space. Housed in the former Thai Saweiy between First and Second streets on Gold Avenue, the new eatery features a regular menu and weekly specials based on the delicious dreams of Chef David Ruiz. Combining his upbringing in California and love of comfort food from all over the states, Ruiz has created a menu that is eclectic and familiar at the same time. In addition to the already beloved freight train green chile burger (you have to see for yourself) and tuna tacos, diners can order daily specials that showcase Ruiz’ eclectic talents. Recently, he answered the yodel in diners’ souls with spinach and sesame seed spaetzle paired with Santa Fe Brewing’s own Oktoberfest, and came out the next night with Scottish salmon. He, along with owners Marc Anthony and Kathy Punya (former owner of Thai Saweiy), hope their new venture will take root in the hearts of Albuquerque diners.

Food News Pit Stop

Even if you don’t know the difference between a meatball (an easy pitch) and pigskin (a football), you may find yourself spending more time in Albuquerque’s sports district, if University of New Mexico’s development plans go through. The university is hoping to attract local names to build in the current parking lot on University Avenue and Avenida César Chávez, between the football stadium and the Pit. UNM developers envision an entertainment district where fervent and nascent fans alike can enjoy some food and brew at any point during the array of sports related exhibitions offered throughout the year. It is the developer’s wish to welcome New Mexico-based businesses first, dependent on submitted proposals (due Dec. 1). Currently, the approximated thousands of people who traffic the area on any given game night only have Dion’s and Quarters BBQ for local options in close proximity.

Food News Encore No More

The former owners of Pulse Nightclub, an all-inclusive favorite in the LGBTQ community that closed its doors a decade ago, recently halted plans to resurrect as Pulse Encore. Located in upper Nob Hill, the nightspot had undergone renovations to give the space a facelift after the closing of Copa Cabana, the short-lived previous tenant. The owners hoped to reinstate the safe and stimulating environment of the original Pulse, with improvements in lighting, sound and foam machines. But, entrepreneurs Andrew and David Rosales experienced red tape issues in procuring the right liquor license, and after more than a year of effort, have decided to focus on other business ventures for the time being.
