Drums are only one of many instruments that make up most bands these days, but there are still those groups such as Concepto Tambor that rely on beat as their soul ingredient. What started in 2000 as a way for local drummers and percussionists to gather and combine their talents has had its changes over the years, but the current eight-piece line-up continues to perform its blend of Afro-Latin beats and call-and-response style of singing and chanting at any venue in town that is worth its weight. Concepto performs on instruments that many people have probably not even heard of: Surdos, cajon, berimbau, repique, to name a few. And now the ensemble is releasing a four-song EP, Raza d' Oro, tonight. Get to the show on time, because Concepto creates an atmosphere of fun with a charismatic entrance, wild moves onstage and a rock 'n' roll attitude that keeps the spirituality of the show going without break.

Friday, May 21; Launchpad (21 and over, 9 p.m.): No matter where you go you can do at least one thing: create rhythms. I mean, think about it, as long as we are alive our heart beats a consistent rhythm that is as enchanting as it is tribal.
