Enjoy the freedom of Halloween while you can. Not the freedom of trick-or-treating (… you’re getting a little old for that anyway, aren’t you?), nor the freedom of buying a sack of fun-sized candy bars at Walgreens “for the kids,” only to eat them all by yourself while ogling other people’s neighborhoods from your car (uh … never mind). I’m talking about the freedom to dance like a complete idiot because, this night of all magical nights, your true identity is completely obscured by a shame-masking costume. At long last, you’re free to Macarena! Try it out at one of these quasi-underground dance parties.

Thriller

Some young upstarts have rented Club 7 (Central between Fifth and Sixth Streets NW) for the night of Friday, Oct. 26. The surprise twist is that it actually sounds like a good party, especially with music by DJ Automatic and other special guests. Cost is $10 in your costume ($15 without—but what’s the point?). Freaky Folk Fest

Aw, what the hell? I can’t resist a Romani hoedown. Members of Goddess of Arno throw a “Halloween Balkan Bash” every year at Winning Coffee Co. (Harvard just south of Central). Music and folk dancing starts at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27. Cost is $5 at the door, free for kids under 12. Oh yeah, this is definitely all-ages.

Sexy Robots

Boogie down in Barelas from 6 p.m. to midnight on Saturday. Global electronic soul courtesy of Sexy Robot, Quela and others at Out ch’Yonda (929 Fourth Street). I’m assuming this one’s 21+, but call 385-5634 to be sure.

Rhythm for a Reason

A $15 cover may sound steep, but every penny is being donated to Project Share, a local nonprofit dedicated to feeding Albuquerque’s homeless. This Corrales charity gala is essentially a classy, overgrown house party with beautiful people to spare. Alidocious and DJ Kryst supply the soundtrack on Saturday. Get Hookah-ed Up

Not only will Meat the Vegans release their new album at Saturday’s Fright Fest party (18+), but a grand prize winner of the night’s costume party/raffle will score a free hookah from Hunab Hookah. It can all be yours for $5 with costume, $10 without (but again, why you’d be without a costume is beyond reason). The party starts at 9:30 p.m. at the Hunab Hookah Lounge (3400 Constitution NE).
