Google “best songwriters,” and you may be surprised by how few women appear on resulting best-of lists. Mick and Keef get mad cred, as do Elton John and Bernie Taupin. There are a few mentions of Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell and Carole King, but many wildly talented women songwriters—like Kate Bush, PJ Harvey, Chrissie Hynde, Loretta Lynn, Aimee Mann, Dolly Parton and Patti Smith—garner far fewer mentions, except on lists of “female songwriters.” Thursday Night Girl Fight aims to change that mentality on Thursday, Aug. 29, at Low Spirits (2823 Second Street NW). Discotays, Little Bobby, Post War Germany and other acts cover songs written by women, and it’s a 21-and-over benefit for outsider women’s music fest Gatas y Vatas. Five bucks gets you in; the show kicks off at 8pm.

They say birds of a feather flock together, and unearthing the hidden talents of Blackbird staffers is the theme underlying the Birds of a Feather showcase at Blackbird Buvette (509 Central NW) on Friday, Aug. 30. The 505 sound gets repped by: garage/psych/drone rock duo Elevator Boys; psychedelic grunge-hop outfit Summon; sleaze-doom trio [H]ohm; death-and-glitter pop band Shoulder Voices and DJ Nicolatron. El Cerrito, Calif.-based husband-and-wife neo-noir outfit La Fin Absolute du Monde injects some West Coast darkness into the lineup. This 21-and-over concert takes off at 10pm, and there’s no cover.

I’ve never been able to stomach energy drinks. Maybe it’s because I’m an anxious person, and I don’t want to subject others to my fully awake self. Or perhaps it’s because the taste and aroma of those beverages call to mind the inside of a coin purse. Never mind all that because Rockstar Energy Drink Uproar Festival is partnering with 104.1 The Edge and 94 Rock to rev up Revolt on the Rio Grande, a two-day festival concert featuring Jane’s Addiction. That’s the fest’s big draw, but Alice in Chains, Korn, Avenged Sevenfold, Coheed and Cambria, Danko Jones and several other groups rock Isleta Amphitheater (5601 University SE) from Friday, Aug. 30, through Saturday, Aug. 31. General admission tickets range from $51.35 to $114.50.

The route of Wolfe crisscrosses the high desert on Wednesday, Sept. 4. The release only hits the streets one day before this concert, so you can rest assured that Wolfe isn’t weary of her new material yet.
