It’s the child of country and Western and rhythm and blues, the hell-raising brother of rock and roll. Rockabilly roared into its own in the mid-’50s. Its rise was propelled by Sun Records owner Sam Phillips and his work with Elvis, which essentially repackaged a black sound for a white audience. Sixty years later, outfits here in Albuquerque keep that music alive—the acoustic slap bass, the electric guitar twang and the big, jumping beat.On Saturday, July 7, beginning at 9 p.m., the Alibi’s Group Hug and The Low Flyers Car Club present the Rockabilly Blow Out at the Launchpad. The show features performances by The Hi-Lo Tones, Burque Burlesque and special guest Raw Deal from El Paso, Texas. DJ Lucky Duran will be playing hepped up records in between sets, and you’ll be able to spend some dough on duds, wax and car stuff at a local vendors’ court. The music goes hand-in-hand with the Hot Rod Hop wherein, beginning at 2 p.m., gearheads will line up classic cars in front of Downtown’s KiMo Theatre.
