Low Culture in the afternoon

Whether you’re in the mood for an afternoon record store performance or an evening gig, Las Cruces poppy garage-punk act Low Culture has you covered. The group’s debut album, Screens, is available for presale on blue vinyl. The title track dropped on Dirtnap Records’ name-your-price 2012 sampler (bit.ly/dirtnap2012) and it’s a quick, remarkable tune. Low Culture perform at an all-ages concert at Synchro Studio (512-B Yale SE) on Saturday, Jan. 12, along with other Southwest bands: Cruces chaotic punk duo-slash-trio Pregnant, Again, local grindcore fivesome Harbors and Navajo DIY punk crew Downplay Music (hailing from Tuba City, Ariz.). The amps crank up at 7:30 p.m. and there’s a suggested donation of six bucks. Mecca Records (1404 Central SW) hosts Low Culture, Fando and Pregnant, Again on Sunday afternoon. Starting at 3 p.m., stop in, rock out and buy some merch.

Genre-palooza at Burt’s

Bigawatt is the self-described “doomcream R&B” solo project of Marisa Demarco. As Demarco was the Alibi Editor in Chief until recently, I was unable to wax on about her work. Bigawatt’s debut album, released by Sicksicksick Distro, was a personal revelation. While the release embraces experimentalism, her penchant for hip-hop and R&B ensures that every listen is accompanied by pleasant, often involuntary, movement. On Saturday, startng at 10 p.m., indie rock duo Fart House, punk trio the Bruisers and Bigawatt featuring Ipytor Gavyen Machislav cast a spell at Burt’s Tiki Lounge (313 Gold SW). There’s no cover.

Popular music and a Boys Choir

Folk sextet Telegraph Canyon will pull on your Americana and pop heartstrings on Monday, Jan. 14, at Low Spirits (2823 Second NW). Hailing from Fort Worth, Texas, the group’s sound is bright, jangly and not at all old fashioned. Southern rock fivesome Glossary combines slightly southern-fried riffs and the tropes of pop music for an alternately (and sometimes simultaneously) gospel, country and top 40 vibe. Albuquerque Boys Choir are always a charming and inspired sight and sound. The 21-and-over gig starts at 9 p.m. and admission is $5.
