I remember all too well what it’s like to be 11 years old. Awkward. Insecure. Mentally and hygienically unstable. Nothing like the self-assured tween the Launchpad has become. You’re finally a woman, Launchpad. We’re so proud of you—mazel tov!

Saturday, Sept. 6, is your chance to toast 11 years of Launchpad and finally get around to celebrating its reopening after the
Golden West fire shuttered it for much of this year.

The 12-hour birthday spanking starts at 2 p.m. and features 21 of Burque’s best bands, from varsity rock—like
Black Maria, Anesthesia, Torture Victim and The Ground Beneath—to luminous young Turks—like The Grave of Nobody’s Darling, Bellemah and The Porter Draw. The show will also function as a reunion of old-school-Albuquerque alt.rockers Starskyand another chance to see Bovine back in the vintage saddle.

The cheap $5 cover will go toward any of the remaining bills insurance didn’t cover from the Golden West fire. There’ll be free food for you, too. Check the full lineup at
launchpadrocks.com.

Music To Your Ears Movies That Rock

David Byrne is appearing in the flesh on Sept. 28 at the Kiva Auditorium in Albuquerque. Just in time to rile up the ticket holders and satiate the Byrne fans who can’t get a seat, the excellently named Esther Bone Memorial Library will extend its hours for for an after-hours screening of the Talking Heads’ landmark 1984 Stop Making Sense concert. (… the one with the big suit.)

The free, hour-and-a-half-long screening is on Friday, Sept. 5, at 7 p.m. Seating begins at 6:30 p.m. Find Esther Bone Library at 950 Pinetree SE in unhistoric Rio Rancho. Just show up, or call 891-5012 ext. 3128 (e-mail rnankin@ci.rio-rancho.nm.us) with your questions.

Also on Friday, the
Santa Fe Brewing Company (27 Fire Place, south of Cerrillos exit NM14) will host a "virtual concert" of the String Cheese Incident’s farewell show. Wait a minute—didn’t those cult-cultivating jamsters throw their three-day farewell show at Red Rocks in August of last year? Well, yes. But, as my cubicle-mate Devin O’Leary points out, "Maybe you were too stoned the first time."

Relive three and a half hours of the jam-borie at 9 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance (
ampconcerts.org) or $15 day-of. And unlike the Esther Bone Library screening, drinking and shouting is encouraged.
