The bad news is STOVE is closing. The good news is the space isn’t going away–it’s getting passed on to the folks of Black Market Goods, an underground traveling gallery (skip to the arts section to read about the details of the handover). The bad news is that means no more (ir)regular live music at 114 Morningside NE. But the good news is the last music event at the East Nob Hill artspace/venue will be a reunion of Albuquerque pirate queens Potty Mouth Sherry’s. Relocated bandmate Cassady Fernandez is back in New Mexico for Christmas, and so PMS is rebooting for a quickie. Say “hi” to PMS and “bye” to STOVE as a music venue this Friday, Dec. 26, with Fando and Roñoso. The show starts at 8:30 p.m. and cover’s $5.

Music To Your Ears One, Four, Five, Live

Dave Denny, a 35-year veteran KUNM DJ and lifelong Burqueño, committed a good chunk of his energy to turning his city blue. Denny’s bimonthly "The Blues Show" on 89.9 FM was Albuquerque’s radio hub for blues news, interviews, and live and studio recordings of musicians old and new, near and far. His Oct. 17 passing left music lovers feeling a darker shade of Denny’s favorite color. That’s the blues.

Without Denny’s assured hand to steer "The Blues Show," KUNM has a hole in its schedule. The station also has stacks of records and CDs with no one to rummage through and play them.

KUNM is looking for the right person to carry the mantle that Denny wore so easily—someone with a passion for blues, a working knowledge of the genre from 1900 (give or take) to now, an eye on emerging artists, a head full of interview questions and, yes, a proclivity for fund raising once in a while.

The show broadcasts every other week on Wednesday from 7 to 10 p.m., with a minimum of 22 live programs a year. Candidates with radio experience are preferred, but KUNM is willing to train.

Think you’ve got what it takes? Submit a cover letter, a playlist, and an aircheck or audio demo to KUNM, care of Rachel Kaub (Room 320) or Matthew Finch (Room 304a) by Friday, Jan. 30, 2009. What the hell is an "audio demo" you ask? KUNM staffers say if you don’t have access to recording equipment but wow them with your blues knowledge, cover letter and playlist, they’ll help you put the demo together with their own high-tech stuff.

The host will be announced no later than Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009.
