Screen Name: slumberjack Real Name: Dylan Gauntt Age: 25, Pisces Winning Earwig mix: Play This Loud! Hear it at: alibi.com/earwig What’s your day job? Academic advisor for the Bachelor of University Studies program at UNM. What are you reading? I recently finished the Sandman series of graphic novels by Neil Gaiman, I’m currently in the middle of Homer’s Iliad . What was the best concert you ever attended? Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers at the Journal Pavilion years ago, I don’t remember exactly when. The entire show was amazing, especially the encore. They closed with a cover of "Gloria" that must have been at least 30 minutes long. I still get chills thinking about it. Your mix blurs a quite a few boundaries, genre-wise. What was the tone you were attempting to establish? I guess I’m not sure what specific mood, if any, I may have been in or going for. I just put together my favorite songs to play loud enough to fill whatever space I occupy. "Play This Loud! … ’Til your ears bleed …” was a little misleading for me at first, since a title like that normally prescribes some sort of "rawk." I completely agree that the title can be deceiving, and I’m not surprised it was misleading to you at first. These are all songs that can be played at full blast without hurting my ears, which helps me to get totally lost in the sound. If anything, I suppose that’s what I was going for: music that can envelop you entirely and make you forget that silence is an option. When’s the best time to play this mix, or any good music, at full volume? Anytime, really. Good, loud music is a must for playing pool or driving. Are you a musician of some sort? I play guitar mostly but also some bass, drums, piano, and I used to play cello. Shout out your favorite local bands! A Man About A Horse, The X-Khans, The Rum Fits, TGMB, The Unemploid, Leeches of Lore, Dread Pirate Hotchkiss (and, of course, I still listen to ol’ Morning Wood), Eva Ave. and Carlosaur, Mosquito to Moscow (no longer together).
