Reggae Under the Stars … with Nachos— Local reggae collective One Foundation/Mystic Vision is taking their message-heavy music to an unlikely venue this weekend: El Pinto (10500 Fourth Street). It’s the first I’ve heard of a traditional New Mexican restaurant hosting anything but mariachis, but why not? It’s got that beautiful North Valley patio, which Mystic Vision says they’ll happily take advantage of. The group will be filming the performance for a DVD they’re putting together. Show starts around 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 25. I’m not aware of any cover charge, but you should probably order something to make the owners happy.

Music To Your Ears

The Great Name Change Update– After much ado about naming (See "Music To Your Ears," May 18-24, 2006), skankers Morning Wood XXX have at last revealed their new title to the people of Albuquerque. From here on out, the band will be known as Dread Pirate Hotchkiss, in honor of the group’s late guitarist and vocalist Chris Hotchkiss, who died in a car accident in 2004. Pirate parties interested in contacting the salty lads should disregard their old e-mail address (mowooxxx@hotmail.com) in favor of dreadpiratehotchkiss@gmail.com. "Be on the lookout for the jolly roger, with dreadies," said an announcement to the group’s fan e-mail list, further elaborating with a simple "Yarrr." Yo ho ho and a barrel of groupies to you!

The Pleasure Pilots
Debut– Santa Fe’s The Pleasure Pilots are no strangers to playing out. They’ve spent the past year and some change cultivating a following of music and dance enthusiasts throughout northern New Mexico, but their Friday, June 23, gig at Harlow’s marks their debut performance in Albuquerque. The six-piece outfit features Fred Spencer, former lead guitarist for the Soul Deacons, backed by a Hammond B3 organ, bass, drum and two saxophones. Keyboardist David Phillips says the Pilots place a high premium on getting people on their feet and moving—be it rocking rhythm, swinging blues or jumping jive. Want to get on board? Show starts at 9 p.m. with a $7 cover.
