When I was little, my father made me memorize Wordsworth poems and frequently took me and my sister to Shakespeare plays. But he was also fond of propping us up on barstools in front of live bands, ordering us rounds of Shirley Temples. This is likely why, rather than being the affluent attorney my father wishes I was, I’m writing a music column and wondering how I’m going to pay all of my bills and afford to go record shopping this week. I’d rather be here than there, though, and I’m thankful to my dad for his part in creating my reality and, well, me.

All of that exposition was to remind everyone that
Sunday, June 19, is Father’s Day . If, unlike mine, your dear ol’ dad lives nearby, and, like mine, he’s a rabid music fan, below are some music-y events you can take him to on his day. C’mon, buy your dad a Shirley Temple. Or a beer.

Double Plow

World-class beer combined with country-fried jamming is exactly the kind of thing my dad would enjoy. Double Plow plays at
Marble Brewery (111 Marble NW) on Saturday, June 18, at 8 p.m.

Summerfest: Featuring Bobby Hendricks’ Drifters

This vintage doo-wop act, responsible for hits like “Save The Last Dance For Me” and “Under the Boardwalk,” takes the stage at Civic Plaza on Saturday, June 18.
The family-friendly event takes place from 7 to 10:30 p.m. and is free.

Albuquerque Folk Festival

See Spotlight.

Father’s Day Fiesta at the Zoo

Mariachi Tradicional, Grupo Kontratiempo, Grupo Innovación and Tropicalisimo Apache round out the Latin lineup at the Rio Grande Zoo (903 Tenth Street SW) on Sunday.
This show is free with regular zoo admission—$7 adults, $3 seniors and kids 12-and-under—and happens from 1 to 5 p.m.

Sunday Jam Session: Claudio Perez Quartet

Join the New Mexico Jazz Workshop on Sunday from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. (show up early for good seats) at the
Seasons rooftop patio (2031 Mountain NW). The event is free, but you’ll want to order from the upscale restaurant’s delicious food and drink menus.

Furthermore, please check our illustrious
Club Calendar for more fatherly things to do this weekend.
