At one point in time, the Alibi was so cool that it had members of Detroit power pop band The Romantics taking showers at its offices. We presented stages that featured one-of-a-kind Brian Jonestown Massacre psychedelic freak-outs. Hometown (and national) darling The Shins even performed for us in the middle of Fourth Street. Those were the days of the Crawls when scores of musicians would descend on Downtown and turn the district into the live music mecca it ought to be every weekend.Since then, this blogging thing really took off on the Internet, and the economy hit rock bottom. The profits vs. costs vs. efforts required to put on a big street festival began to make less sense, and the Crawls became merely a fond memory. The Alibi still likes to rock, though. On Friday, Feb. 4, your lovelorn weekly paper along with RockSquawk.com is presenting a Valentine-themed night of music and fun titled Heart Strings. The show is being hosted by our old friend the Launchpad and features the smooth, satiny sounds of Ghost Circles, Sandia Man, Sabertooth Cavity and Ya Ya Boom. Attendees can partake in free Mexican food from El Norteño, win prizes and make love (but not intercourse). Other activities include an open “Luv Mic” wherein anyone can put their lowered inhibitions to good use and make a profession of love. Entries in our Valentines Day Card Contest will also be in tow—help us judge them. Both males and females will be there, too!The show starts at 9 p.m. and admission is $8 for those 21-and-over (legal lovin’ age).
