L.A. rapper Scarub and Chicago’s Robust headlined an iteration of the Vinyl & Verses series at Burt’s Tiki Lounge on Wednesday, Aug. 31. Both MCs have strong roots and recognition in the underground/independent hip-hop scene. Scarub came up as part of Living Legends and Mystik Journeymen, Bay Area crews that lit it up in the ’90s displaying smooth swagger coupled with multilayered lyricism.

Robust, meanwhile, made a name for himself on Chicago’s
Galapagos4 label, sharing stages with underground legends the Typical Cats in the early aughts. Both rappers’ penchants for quick wordplay full of witticisms and hometown pride was complimented well by local duo Definition Rare, whose MCs Def-i and Wake-Self represented the 505 with sharp chemistry and an energetic dynamic.
