Monday, June 19, Burt’s Tiki Lounge (21-and-over); Free: Picture yourself on a deserted island wearing only a pair of cutoff jeans and a pair of specs with some stylish frames. The pseudo-foreboding music that’s streaming through your brain like the beads of sweat on your forehead is Shirrelle C. Limes and the Lemons. Your world is simultaneously at war with and completely at peace with everything inside it. Never have I heard something so poppy and refreshing that it makes me severely nervous. Ms. Limes’ lyrics don’t help because, try as I might, I can’t figure out what the hell they’re about, but they certainly reek of loneliness. Limes uses mostly electronic instruments, such as synths and a drum machine, to paint a soundscape that’s easy to swallow while still leaving a funny taste in your mouth. “Night Light” illustrates this point well. It begins with a “fun in the sun”-style guitar riff but then quickly becomes a moody, synth-based nightmare with the previously warm guitar playing a persistent and nagging down strum while Limes talks about “moving her hair.” It’s difficult to compare this music to other artists but, whatever the sound is, it’s a little slice of heavenish hell, and it’s coming to town on Monday.
