Aaron Hendren is a local filmmaker, responsible for such twisted tales as The Faithful and the Foul and Flicker. Lately he’s been staying up all night composing and recording 99 percent of the music for his upcoming Psycho Bettys From Planet Pussycat. Here are five random little gems that have been inspiring him.
1) “Ruby Soho” • Rancid • … And Out Come The Wolves “This is on the second tier of my occasional, ongoing punk rock phase. It’s ‘90s-style, but still somehow awesome.”
2) “Too Fast For Love” • Mötley Crüe • Too Fast For Love “Maybe I don’t brag about it in every social circle, but this entire album has been with me since childhood. I love this song with the kind of fondness that some people might have for ‘Sesame Street.’ ”
3) “Don’t Leave Me This Way” • Thelma Houston • The Best of Thelma Houston “This song has great energy. I’ve always wondered why a rock band hasn’t made a great cover of it. Now that I think about it, maybe they have. I’m going to go look.”
4) “SexyBack” • Justin Timberlake • FutureSex / LoveSounds “I’ve always had a thing for fun, three-chord rock and roll songs. I suppose it’s debatable if this qualifies, but when I’m in my car and singing along, I’d swear it does.”
5) “Love’s Got a Line on You” • Scandal • Scandal “I had this EP on cassette when I was a kid and it still comes up in my life from time to time. It’s just pure ’80s, pop fun. And really, that also describes the altar at the church in my mind—that I just made up.”
