Mildred McGillicutty (nom de screen of a local blogger) is a keeper of books, collector of velvet matador paintings and murderer of goldfish. She is also a closeted lover of Joni Mitchell, and she was very relieved that none of the sweet, soprano songwriter’s ’60s swill tainted her randomly shuffled playlist found below.

1) “Nora” • The Long Winters • When I Pretend to Fall

“It’s not my favorite song of theirs, but they’re definitely one of my favorite bands. I first saw them at Austin City Limits Music Festival a couple of years back.”

Music Playlist

2) “No Trophy” • A Band of Bees • Sunshine Hit Me

“I don’t know if I’ve ever heard this song before.”

Music Playlist

3) “Walken” • Wilco • Sky Blue Sky

“I actually don’t like the
Sky Blue Sky album. It’s the only Wilco album that I don’t like—it’s kind of lame. This is one of the few songs on this CD that I do like. All of the other ones are too mellow. It has a little bit of an edge to it, at least.”

Music Playlist

4) “Brother Sport” • Animal Collective • Merriweather Post Pavilion

“It makes me want to get my groove on. [
Dances in chair. ] I think they’re maybe somewhat of a pretentious band—kind of full of themselves—but this is a fun song.”

Music Playlist

5) “How Low” • José González • In Our Nature

“His voice is deep and soothing, it vibrates. And I like the artwork on the CD. And I also have no idea what he’s saying … it doesn’t matter.”
