Sunday, Aug. 13, Atomic Cantina (21-and-over); Free: One unfortunate thing about Albuquerque is that it’s an inconvenient stop on a band’s tour—kind of out-of-the-way, really, depending on where the group is coming from. That’s a big deal when you’re on the Cheetos-til-you-puke, pocket-change-equals-another-mile tour. It means you might not want to spend a precious big-money Friday or Saturday night in a town that’s a few hundred mile off-the-trek diversion from middle America to California or Phoenix.Luckily, we have such a bizarrely vibrant music scene here, rock or otherwise, that many incredible up-and-comers choose to make the journey anyway. They just do it on a Sunday. You would not believe the caliber of musicians coming through this town on a work night. This Student Film and The Hex show promises to be exactly that kind of evening. Both acts are making the drive from Oklahoma City, which makes one wonder: What’s in the water up there that’s breeding super songwriters? Or is this that genius that comes from restlessness in Dullsville? Hey, it worked for us.Student Film is bringing back that special something a lot of condensed indie rock has forgotten about: the instrumental build. These sections don’t happen in an annoying, flashy way but rather to set the tone of the track.I love that when the six people in The Hex chose "experimental" as one of its three genre words on MySpace, they really meant it. These musicians know how to let a song determine its own structure without forcing it around. Indie rock, but not to the point of genre-staunched limitation, if The Hex’s show is anything like its recorded music, it’ll be worth the Monday morning hangover.
