The city’s all-ages music and performing arts space planned for 508 First Street NE is set to open in December. The old Ice House building has architectural plans drawn up for 14,000 square feet of multiuse main floor space, a 10,000 square-foot basement (with a small movie theater, among other things) and a built-out roof area. It even has a name: Warehouse 508. Now all it needs is you.To get the word out, organizers of the teen-centric arts space are throwing an all-ages show with free music, free pizza and free information on Warehouse 508. Funk, jazz, neo-soul, big-band, electric blues, gospel—Hillary Smith has got to be the most versatile vocalist in the state. And she pushes it out with a righteous presence that stands up to a full band of the most powerful players we have. Watching her at work is a joyride. All these soulful sides come out to play in Smith’s new album, No Easy Way, which she’ll release at two CD release parties this weekend.
